Just sharing my study on the prophecies of Daniel 9, if you are pleased to read it. The two subjects – Jerusalem and the Messiah – separately are chronological , but not chronological to each other.
“Seventy weeks have been decreed for your people and your holy city, to finish the transgression, to make an end of sin, to make atonement for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy and to anoint the most holy place.
– At the end of the 70 weeks the Messiah will bring “everlasting righteousness” and anoint the most holy place (every Believer) with the Holy Spirit making their bodies the Temple of God (the mystery hidden from the prophets).
“So you are to know and discern that from the issuing of a decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until Messiah the Prince there will be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks; it will be built again, with plaza and moat, even in times of distress.
– From the issuing of the decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem – “rebuild” the wall and streets around the city took seven weeks – 49 years (Neh 6:15), and “restore” the city (returning the city back to the Jews happened four times) equals 62 weeks.
– Then, in 62 weeks, Jerusalem receives the appearance of the Messiah which is the END of 69 weeks (7+62).
“Then after the sixty-two weeks the Messiah will be cut off and have nothing, and the people of the prince who is to come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. And its end will come with a flood; even to the end there will be war; desolations are determined.
– AFTER the 62 weeks – plus seven weeks from the decrees = 69 (or in the King James “after threescore and two weeks” into the 70th week) the Messiah is cut off (crucified) in the middle of the 70th week.
– The city and the temple will be destroyed by the Romans, BUT NOT YET, the Messiah makes a covenant with many for one week FIRST.
“And he will make a firm covenant with the many for one week, but in the middle of the week he will put a stop to sacrifice and grain offering; and on the wing of abominations will come one who makes desolate, even until a complete destruction, one that is decreed, is poured out on the one who makes desolate.”
– And he (the Messiah) will CONFIRM the covenant with Israel for one week (the 70th), and put a stop to sacrifices in the middle of the week (by the Atonement and ripping of the veil of the Temple).
– With this covenant, Jesus gives Israel one more week to turn to Him before the 70 weeks of Daniel end. The first half of the week was His ministry, and the second half was from His death until the stoning of Stephen. (The Book of Acts shows the progression of preaching only to the Jews in the years from Jesus death until Stephen is martyred. From then on, the gospel was taken away from Israel and given to the Gentiles as the 70 weeks had expired).
– *(The prophecy of Dan 9:26 of the temple being destroyed had to be future otherwise the Messiah could not have stopped the sacrifices mid week in verse 27, because the Temple would have already been destroyed and no sacrifices going on).
– Then, Jerusalem and the Temple were destroyed by the Romans and Israel taken captive, because they did not receive their Messiah.
“They will not leave one stone on another, because you did not recognize the time of God’s coming to you”
(Luke 19:44; cf. Luke 21:20-24).
– Before the Temple is brought down, the abomination of desolation Jesus said was in Daniel occurs. -Titus would have performed a sacrifice in the Temple for several reasons before destroying it.
Matthew 24:15 ‘Whenever, therefore, ye may see the abomination of the desolation, that was spoken of through Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place (whoever is reading let him observe)
Mark 13:14 ‘And when ye may see the abomination of the desolation, that was spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing where it ought not, (whoever is reading let him understand), then those in Judea, let them flee to the mountains;
Luke 21:20 ‘And when ye may see Jerusalem surrounded by encampments, then know that come nigh did her desolation;
Daniel 11:31 And strong ones out of him stand up, and have polluted the sanctuary, the stronghold, and have turned aside the continual [sacrifice], and appointed the desolating abomination.
We are in the millennium now – the time between the first and second coming of Messiah – (the 1,000 years of Revelation is symbolic for the term of our earthly life, or His Return, whichever comes first). Under the New Covenant, we are reigning as priests and kings (Rev 1:6), until Jesus’ comes a final time and eternity begins for those written in the Lamb’s book of Life, (or the second Death for evildoers). There is no more unrighteousness in the presence of God, or His people, after He returns, they were thrown into the Lake of Fire. The New Jerusalem on the new earth is our dwelling place, with Jesus as the Light, FOREVER!
Otherwise, how would it be possible, after the once-for-all sacrifice of the Lamb, the culmination of the Father’s plan of redemption since Genesis – (Gen 3:15), after the Resurrection/Rapture of the Elect (1Thess 4:16-17), the end of time on earth (eternity reached) and the fulfillment of the mystery of God – the Church (Rev 10:6-7), and the victorious defeat of the final enemy “death” (1Cor 15:26) that the earth can be populated with sinful, fallen mankind for 1,000 years, during which time people will be born and die? After the Resurrection, man will be as the angels, no sexes, no reproduction (Matt 22:30), so how can children be born through procreation, sin and die, when death was defeated and men became like the angels the moment Jesus split the sky at the end of the Tribulation?
It is not possible. Nor, is it possible that Jewish sacrifices can be resumed after the Lamb has been slain. That would be an abomination greater than Satan standing in a temple.
The Kingdom of God is here NOW, spiritually, yearning for His physical Return and the redemption of our bodies.
Luk 17:21 Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.
Thanks for the comment (& commentary!) While I would certainly grant that the Millennial view that you’re putting forth does have have some merit in some areas, I would have to respectfully disagree wit the position. It seems that too much has to be seen as symbolic, when there is no necessary hermeneutical reason to view it this way (1000 years as symbolic, etc). Even when it comes to sacrifices taking place in the temple during the early part of Daniel’s 70th week, nothing in the text would indicate that is intended to be taken anything but plainly literally, just as there once were sacrifices, there will be once again. Even if it would be an abomination to perform sacrifices after the ultimate sacrifice of Christ, that would be understandable, since Israel would still be in unbelief during that point.
